The next day, Mr. Lorry and I hid in the wine shop from the madness in the streets. We overheard some other revolutionaries talking’ about Madame Defarge’s plan to accuse the Manette's of spying, and to accuse Lucy’s little baby as well. Madame Defarge was out of control she was. The doors open and in walks Mr. Carton who had just returned to Paris to try and help free Charles. He took travel papers from his coat that would allow Lucy, the doctor, and the child to leave the city and gave them to Mr. Lorry and then he gave him his own papers, but he refused to explain why. All he told Mr. Lorry is that time is of the essence! The family must leave tomorrow! Later that night, I saw Mr. Carton enter a chemist's shop and there he bought a flask of ether. When he came back outside he saw Miss Lucy standing beneath the prison window hoping to catch a glimpse of her doomed husband. Now I watched from a distance but I heard Mr. Carton utter a final goodbye and blessing to Miss Lucy. Poor Mr. Carton.
