JERRY CRUNCHER: Mr. Lorry received the letter from Gabelle. It was addressed to the Marquis St. Evrémonde. Charles Darnay was there when the letter arrived, and careful to let no one suspect that he was in fact the missing Evrémonde, said that he knew the Marquis, and would deliver it himself. Now Charles returned home and alone he read the letter and instantly made preparations to try and save Gabelle. He wrote a farewell letter to Lucy, his daughter and Doctor Manette, knowing the possibility that he may never return. The next day, he went back to Paris, but was stopped and questioned by revolutionaries upon his arrival. When he mentioned his name they immediately arrested him and locked him up. He protested and started talking about his rights and all but the guards reminded him that the Evrémonde's had no rights anymore. Alone in his cell, he reflected on what he had given up and that he might never see his sweet Lucy or his newborn child again and that Gabelle was lost forever. Once again, his future looked awful grim. Grim Indeed! Poor Mr. Darnay.
